Purpose

Objective

Project Summit SFU’s aim is to help promote and build an inclusive community for students enrolled at SFU. The primary focus is establishing an accessible means for SFU students and other community members to partake in the introductory of rock climbing.

Events such as “The Project,” a beginner-focused outdoor event that promotes easy access, collaboration, and introductory to the sport, enables for Project Summit SFU’s mission as an organization.

Problem

Since its opening in 2017, the SFU climbing wall has been a modern facility offering a range of programs from introductory courses and youth programs to competitive training and Provincial competitions related to sport and trad climbing, playing a significant role in the SFU community.

During the winter break of 2023/2024, SFU Student Services announced their decision to indefinitely close the SFU climbing wall starting in the Spring 2024 semester. On January 11th, 2024, no public statement has been issued regarding the closure, nor has there been any opportunity for SFU students to express their input.

The closure has shocked the community, leaving a significant void in SFU recreation that other facilities or activities cannot fill. The climbing wall community is known for being friendly and tightly-knit, and its loss has deeply affected many students and volunteers. Beyond recreation, the wall has fostered a sense of belonging and camaraderie among its users.

On a personal level, many students, including those who chose SFU partly because of the climbing wall, are frustrated by the lack of support from SFU Athletics and Recreation and SFU Student Services. The closure impacts both physical and mental health, undermining a sport that is accessible to everyone and enjoyed throughout their lives. The community is urging SFU Student Services and SFU Athletics and Recreation to reconsider their decision and work towards reopening the wall as soon as possible. A petition has been initiated to gather support and voice the community's concerns, emphasizing the vital role the climbing wall plays in the university's recreational offerings.

Solution

As the SFU climbing wall is currently under temporary closure and while leveraging the existing resources and community within SFU, since March 2024, Project Summit SFU has been the current dynamic rock climbing sports club that has been the alternative solution to foster the pre-existing climbing community and embark on introducing it to the surrounding communities around SFU.
